Grueling Argus for Gidion!
We've come to a stage where Gidion's bone marrow has chronically failed for almost 6 years now. Since he doesn't have a sibling, we cannot try a bone marrow transplant as the survial rate is zero. So our only option is anabolic steroids. First I had to get permission from the Medical Council to bring the drug into South Africa, which was approved. My second challenge is getting the medical aid on board to assist with the costs, as the steroids alone is R2000 per month. Yeah - R180 a pill! He is also going to Grade R next year (I cannot believe how time has gone by) in a private school with a small number of children, due to his lack of immunity and hearing impairment. That also is much more than I can afford. Over the weekend (13 December 2014) we had to give Gidion a blood transfusion to lift his blood counts and boost him. Not that that would ever get him down! His doctor actually said that his fighting spirit and strong will is one of our strongest weapons against FA, since his mind is stronger than his body. He doesn't even cry anymore when the nurses insert the drips or draw bloods - noooo..he tells them that his angels are looking over him and that they are not allowed to hurt him :)
Corinne Scholtz has asked me if she can help in raising funds for Gidion by cycling the Argus for him, where people sponsor per kilometer. The funds raised would be used for Gidion's medical expenses such as his monthly medication, speech and occupational therapy and additional costs that the medical aid does not cover. Please help me to give Gidion the best that I can...
