I don't think you will recognize Gidion.... I took him for a haircut on Tuesday and told the hairdresser to take out the clipper. She was appalled and told me all kids start screaming and crying since they are all afraid. I just said "bring the damn thing". I asked her to switch it on and put Gidion's hand on it. Next moment he grabbed the clipper and put it into his hair all by himself! I had such a good laugh - he knew EXACTLY where it was supposed to go. He didn't cry once and sat still the whole time. Isn't he handsome?

We tested Gidion's blood platelets on Friday, and everything was normal!! We KNOW that God's hand is on our angelchild and is keeping him safe wherever he goes. Thank you for everyone's prayers and for keeping us in your thoughts. God has heard our prayers. All the glory to His name.
He does need a bit of iron though, so mommy is battling now to get it into him. I swear, it's like a reflex - the moment the iron supplement touches his tongue, he starts vomiting *sigh* So now I have to think of innovative ideas on how to get the iron in. But that's fine, I'm an expert now :) On the day that we were discharged, the peadiatrician said that he wanted blood tests to be done. I thought why not, I would've done it in a week or so anyway (remember that we have to monitor Gidion's blood counts for the Fanconi Aneamia every 6 months).
For a bit of background (I'm busy writing up a whole page on Fanconi Aneamia [FA] - watch his website): the majority of kids with FA are very prone to cancer, and eventually failure of the bone marrow. This neccessitates a bone marrow transplant. One would know when the bone marrow starts to struggle by seeing the blood platelet count starting to decrease to below normal levels. The results of Gidion's blood test came about an hour later. I cannot explain how I felt...his platelets were low. I phoned his oncologist, and she said that it might be as a result of the anaesthesia and surgery, but that it is very important to do another blood test in a month's time. I'm asking everyone to please bring Gidion to the Lord's feet and pray for a normal blood count when we do the test again in November. I refuse to believe that it will still be low, and I refuse Satan to steal my joy and my angelchild's health. Gidion will once again prove to be a mighty warrior of God, and God will get all the glory. For everyone who has kept Gidion in their prayers for his operation, thank you very much. he was such a brave little boy. The operation was successful, he was just in a lot of pain. We had to stay over the first night so that the nurses could give him morphine.
He now has 8 "battle scars"...oi... Everytime he looks down, he points his little finger and says "ooouuww".. Our angelchild, who is now a celebrity *smile*, is on tv Monday 18 October on Carte Blanche medical!!
His little friend, Finn, is also joining him, as well as a family who is currently in Graz. Can a mother be more proud of her son? After almost a year, my sweet angelchild has started to drink fluids!!!!!!
I nearly tripped over my feet when I saw that he was actually sipping Cream Soda from a straw (must have REALLY wanted that cold drink!). At one stage I thought he wasn't able to suck, but once again he just proved me wrong. Phew, a huge stone rolled off my shoulders, especially now that summer's here! Carte Blanche was a huge success, Gidion ate like a star in front of the camera. And he was so impressed with the crew, that he didn't want anything to do with mommy or daddy - oh no, we're too boooooooring! :) Check this space for the date of broadcast! And then another surprise - we had another donation for Gidion out of the blue from someone in Uniondale. thank you so much...we are keeping the extra money in a fund for Gidion for when he is older. Gidion is now walking all on his own! It is the sweetest sound to hear the pitter patter of little feet on our tiles when he starts looking for us. He has gained so much confidence, that he actually shakes off our hands when we want to hold his hand while walking!
And then the best news ever... Carte Blanche phoned me to say that they want to produce a story about tube depency in children in SA!! Now at least our voices can be heard and hopefully a clinic can be started in SA. Watch this space! Wow...what a rush! I've asked the Lord if it is His will, that Gidion weighs 7kg by the end of August. Several people have told me that I'm aiming to high, as Gidion was only weighing 6.7kg in the beginning of August. The 7kg milestone was like a HUGE barrier for us that we just couldn't seem to cross. Oh my soul, I can't keep up with my little angelchild star!! Okay, let's start from the beginning...
On Wednesday, mommy just had enough and heard the very last comment of "You have such a beautiful little girl!!". So off to the hairdresser we went for Gidion's first hair cut. He handled it like a star. Off course mommy wanted to cry her eyes out... Gidion is not a baby anymore, but a little boy. Look closely at the first picture...his hair is almost hanging in the middle of his back! Now it is short and beautiful, and now he is mommy's handsome young boy. To my surprise and utter delight, Gidion also decided that since he is a big boy now, he has to start doing what big boys do. So that very afternoon, he started walking on his own!!! Man, what a joy... And he thrives in the praise he gets and giggles the whole time. But that wasn't all! Yesterday evening I weighed him and guess what??? Gidion is back to pre-Graz weight!!!!!! WHOOOOHOOOOO!!!! Wow, what a milestone... It has taken our little star 9 months to reach the weight that he was before we left for Graz.... a whole 6.92kg!!! I can't carry him anymore, he is getting too heavy! Little problem... Gidion refuses to ride in his pram (still has bad associations with Graz)....any ideas people?? *smile* If you should walk outside and see a mom with a chest the size of King Kong, and a permanent smile on her face...know that it is me!!! I am SOOOOO proud of our little angelchild...I feel like I want to giggle and laugh and jump up and down with joy.
Gidion started walking with the aid of his little walker about 3 days ago! Oh man, how cute is that?! He walks like a little stickman, and he is so aware of the attention! He keeps on looking over his shoulder to see who is looking at him and cheering him on *BIG smile* ALSO, he has almost gained back all the weight he has lost when he was sick..go Gidion go!! Jeez...can one's heart burst with pride? Last week mommy also had to buy him a scooter...we had the biggest ever temper tantrum when he saw it in Pick n Pay. When Gidion made "vvrrrooomm" like a car the whole time, how could I say no? Heehee... manipulating mommy since birth! |
